Meet the Memory Person!
Launched in 2022 from an open call for public art, the collaborative project "Meet the Memory Person" is a counter-monument commemorating Munich's cultural practitioners forced into exile during the Nazi regime: a history traditional monuments in Munich rarely address.
Unlike static memorials, the project features a temporary, performative presence in public spaces. Participants act as "The Memory Person," engaging passersby in spontaneous interactions. Through these initial and subsequent encounters—as well as public workshops—the project collects diverse stories of exile and migration spanning many age groups and backgrounds.
These collected memories are transformed into artistic contributions ("mementos") and shared through an online "Open Archive," an expandable catalog, and curated city walks. Together with participants, "The Memory Person" visits "invisible" sites, such as former forced labor camps and guest worker (Gastarbeiter:innen) locations, allowing past and present experiences of migration to enter a living dialogue.
